Frequently asked questions about the Repro enema
In this section, you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about our product, its application and its benefits.
Information about the Reprop enema
Reprop is a “water pump.” The plastic bottle, the flexible extension tube with non-return valve, and the rectal tube form one system. A valve mechanism enables simple manual pumping and hygienic performance of the enema.
This makes the enema easy and safe – no need to hang up or set up containers that might tip over.
Enemas with Reprop can be performed easily and independently, either while sitting on the toilet or lying on your back. With an irrigator, independent use is not possible for many people. An irrigator is hung relatively high above the patient. This creates a gradient and thus a hydrostatic pressure, through which the liquid can flow into the rectum. The pressure, and therefore the flow rate, is very low and cannot be influenced by the patient. The system is very prone to malfunction. The inflow of liquid is often obstructed, either by constipation in the rectum itself or by kinks in the supply tube. Independent use is not possible for many people. They are dependent on assistance from another person.
Reprop triggers bowel movements immediately after use.
Laxatives taken orally are not easy to control in their effect. The desired effect occurs with a delay, about 6–12 hours after intake, or it may suddenly occur unexpectedly. Such laxatives are also associated with side effects such as bloating and cramp-like abdominal pain. Most laxatives, when used over a longer period, cause the loss of water from body tissue into the intestine, leading to dehydration and disturbances in the body’s mineral balance (especially potassium loss). Potassium loss leads to muscle weakness and intestinal sluggishness, which in turn promotes constipation. In contrast to medicinal laxatives, enemas with water do not disrupt the body’s mineral balance.
Enemas with Reprop are quick to perform and very effective. The effect of suppositories, on the other hand, is weak and, if it occurs at all, only sets in after about 15–30 minutes.
Disposable enemas or micro-enemas with ready-to-use instillation solutions consist of a plastic container with a highly concentrated saline solution (approx. 120 ml), equipped with a rectal cannula. Self-insertion of the short cannula is quite difficult. The introduced liquid must be retained in the rectum for several minutes in order for the influx of fluid into the intestine to take effect. Often, however, the patient is not able to retain the liquid long enough, so the desired effect may not occur. Compared to Reprop, disposable enemas are less effective and, with regular use, more expensive than a reusable enema device.
With the so-called bulb syringe, water (approx. 200 ml) is pressed into the rectum using a rubber squeeze ball.
The problem is that, due to the lack of a non-return valve, only a single squeeze is possible. When the pressure is released, the liquid flows back and contaminates the container.
In addition to this hygienic disadvantage, the effectiveness of bulb syringes is very limited, as they cannot introduce sufficient amounts of liquid into the rectum.
The tube clamp is included with both Reprop Basic and Reprop Plus, but it is not strictly necessary. It is mainly intended for use in clinics. This allows the liquid container to be filled with water, the tube clamp to be closed, and then carried to the patient without water leaking out.
Reprop Basic and Plus consists of three components: liquid container, extension tube, and rectal tube. These are simply fitted together. At the end of the extension tube, a non-return valve is installed to prevent contaminated water from flowing back. Standard rectal tubes are supplied, with side openings for water discharge.
Instead of the rectal tube (Reprop Basic and Plus), the Reprop Comfort enema uses an adapter with two blue ends, which is attached to the extension tube, and onto which the irrigator with olive tip is fitted. The irrigator with olive tip is rounded for easy insertion. The shape of the olive also provides additional support when the irrigator is inserted. The anal sphincter muscle encloses the shaft and prevents the irrigator from slipping out.
Read the application instructions – you will find them included with the product or available for download on the homepage.
It is sufficient to insert the rectal tube a few centimeters so that the enema fluid can enter the rectum.
It is sufficient to moisten the rectal tube. However, we recommend using a lubricant to avoid skin irritation.
A water-soluble lubricant also makes cleaning the rectal tube easier.
The device components – bottle with screw cap and non-return valve with extension tube – can be used multiple times.
The rectal tube and the irrigator with olive tip are intended for single use.
However, if the device is used exclusively for personal use, the rectal tube may also be reused several times if properly cleaned. Nevertheless, we recommend regular replacement of the rectal tube. Replacement accessories are available in the shop.
No. Practomed UG purchases the standard rectal tubes from a certified manufacturer. These rectal tubes are only available sterile so that they can be supplied to clinics, where they are also used in operating rooms.
The irrigators with olive tips are purchased and resold non-sterile.
You can reuse the rectal tube for strictly personal use if you wash it after each use. We recommend regularly replacing the rectal tube. For this purpose, we offer accessories.
Only materials that are approved for human medicine in the EU are used.
The bottle with cap is made of LD-PE. The tubing and rectal tube are made of PVC, the air inlet valve is made of silicone, and the non-return valve is made of Plexiglas.
No. DEHP is not used as a plasticizer.
The products contain the plasticizers TOTM and NDG. These plasticizers comply with the new legal requirements.
No, you cannot boil Reprop. Wash the device with soapy water and let it dry thoroughly.
You can do an enema once or several times a day, as long as the rectal tube is inserted carefully and gently and does not irritate the anus. Some customers worry that the bowel may get used to enemas and eventually stop functioning on its own. This concern is unfounded.
We do not have any experience with this ourselves, but we know from customers that it can be used.
Enema for acute complaints:
An enema provides quick relief for many complaints such as constipation or bloating. Enemas work very quickly and are well tolerated by the body. For the treatment of acute complaints with enemas, NO medications or other additives are usually required. A simple enema with water using our kit generally already leads to the desired bowel movement.
Enema for greater well-being:
In cases of fecal incontinence, enemas can help trigger bowel movements at a desired time and place. Our enema kit with carrying bag is also ideal for travel and can be used while sitting on the toilet.
Enema for therapy:
Regular enemas are very important during fasting, as otherwise a kind of self-poisoning can occur. Reprop is ideal for therapeutic fasting, as it is easy to use independently; in addition, the enema can be performed with up to 750 ml of water, allowing for thorough colon cleansing.
Enemas are also often used before surgeries or for the administration of medications into the rectum.
Enemas are an invasive procedure. Almost all children resist them, which is why we generally do not recommend enemas for children under 10 years of age. Older children and adolescents should be thoroughly informed about the type, mode of action, and required behaviors before, during, and after the enema. An enema may only be performed with the child’s consent.
Pregnant women can use enemas for bowel emptying up to the 20th week of pregnancy. From the 21st week of pregnancy onwards, enemas should not be administered without consulting a midwife, gynecologist, or obstetrician, as in some cases they may induce labor.
Treating constipation is often not easy. Swallowing laxatives is often unsatisfactory for those affected, as the onset of action is uncertain. With an enema for constipation, however, bowel movements can be activated within seconds.
Enemas with tap water are gentle
Introducing tap water creates a stretching stimulus, which immediately activates bowel activity and thus defecation – entirely without chemicals. Enemas with water are gentle on the body and have no side effects. Therefore, enemas can also be performed repeatedly in cases of chronic constipation.
Detoxification improves well-being
Cleansing the intestines is just as essential during fasting as adequate hydration. During fasting, the bowel becomes sluggish because it is no longer sufficiently filled, which suppresses the defecation reflex and bowel movements altogether. If stool remains in the intestine for too long, it can lead to a kind of self-poisoning, causing unpleasant symptoms such as headaches and fatigue.
If stool remains in the intestines for an extended period during fasting, fermentation and putrefaction processes occur, and the resulting substances burden the body. Enemas stimulate bowel movements immediately and promote elimination of waste. The absorption of toxins is thereby prevented. Regularly performed enemas help prevent unpleasant symptoms, significantly improving well-being during fasting.
Fasting and enemas for your health
An important goal of fasting is the regulation and maintenance of healthy bowel function. As is well known, there is a close link between digestion and overall health. When the intestines are regularly cleansed through fasting and enemas, our health as a whole improves.
In addition to the classic applications of enemas such as constipation and fasting support, enemas can also provide quick and natural relief in many other situations.
Enemas for bloating
Increased gas volume in the intestinal tract leads to a feeling of fullness and increased flatulence.
Enemas can help remove intestinal gases and gas-forming bacteria. Enemas can help remove intestinal gases and gas-forming bacteria.
Enemas for fecal incontinence and colostomy
The aim of enemas is to empty and cleanse the bowel at the desired time, so that the affected person usually experiences no further bowel movements for several hours afterwards.
Enemas for ulcerative colitis
In cases of inflammation of the left-sided colon, anti-inflammatory medications can be introduced into the rectum with the help of an enema device.
Enemas for diagnostic and therapeutic measures
Enemas can be used for examinations and operations in the anorectal area (e.g., before colonoscopy or rectoscopy).
Naturopathy: enemas during fasting / therapeutic fasting
Cleansing the intestines is just as essential during therapeutic fasting as adequate hydration. During therapeutic fasting, the bowel becomes sluggish because it is no longer regularly filled.
Daily bowel movements may cease. Daily bowel movements may cease. Residual stool may ferment and rot. The substances produced in this process (e.g., ammonia) burden the body and detoxifying organs (liver, kidneys), which can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as headaches and fatigue. Regular enemas can prevent this, significantly increasing well-being during therapeutic fasting.
Enemas with water and glycerin do not cause any damage to the intestinal flora. However, frequent enemas with Glauber’s salt may lead to disturbances in the body’s water and electrolyte balance as well as the intestinal flora.
